On this day I was invited to a free gig at Vrankrijk, a quite peculiar space in the center of Amsterdam. The best way I can define it is a queer friendly anarchist place/community/club. We were there for fun but there are a couple of things I found fascinating about the place and the people I met. Firstly there is a true foundation for mutual respect that is required. You’re not allowed to take photos, or be an asshole (as it is written on the walls. There is a true community feeling. Everything is very cheap, including the food, but you must clean your own dishes to get desert. Everyone is welcome, I have to say I didn’t really fit in visually but no one really cared or made any comments. They also don’t care about what people do in their lives, the jobs they do, if they are high, who they love... I met people from all different backgrounds while I was there, including activists, a sex worker, students... I liked to see a lot of people who were a bit abandoned by society and found a community there. I used to be in spaces like these as a teenager, but they were not queer friendly at all so that was really refreshing.
conclusion | I think it’s a good resource for me, and it reminded me of what is truly important in my life: the queer fight. As a gender queer and pretty much pansexual human myself, I’ve been fighting against stigma and been working hard to understand society and where we belong in it. So it put me on the right track again, to look at my topics but with that in mind.
