I went to a squat party and this is my report:
Squat: unlawfully occupy an uninhabited building or settle on a piece of land.
I've been to a couple squats before, from illegal exhibitions to illegal parties. I was a little gangster when I was a teen, and squats were the safest hangout spot. The spots where everyone met from different backgrounds and linked together with different ideas, no judgement allowed. This is pretty much the story of my gang life. We were living in the shadow of a society that didn't really want us, we were rogue to them before we went rogue. Squat culture is very similar. You create a community, a family, with values of respect and boundaries, fair rules, it's the most quintessential form of democracy, which, due to the amount of freedom and discussion can be seen as anarchy, because, after all, we are breaking the law, and we are disrupting the system. But a squat is not just about disruption, it's about connecting together and finding ways and solutions for the better of everyone. It's not about conspiracies, at least my squats were not. Here are some visuals. The idea is everybody collaborates to the look of the squat, a lot of them are street artists as well. It's a little space to escape.
